Kathmandu, Nepal
A few friends of mine had done some trekking around Everest in Nepal and had absolutely raved about their experience. I decided in October 2007 that I would go on a similar journey to Nepal. I sent out a mass email to see if anyone was interested. Tyler, my boy from Vermont, and Tana, a friend I made through www.couchsurfing.com, were quick to sign on for the adventure.
We flew into Kathmandu and spent a few days roaming the streets. It's a pretty cool place. The streets are packed with people moving too and fro. It's quite hectic and full of energy.
Some heavy-lifting
Kids playing a local game.
Here are some colorful characters. This guy on the right put a dot on my head then followed me around trying to get money for it. I was so irritated after awhile that I just wiped the thing off.
Cool little street market
The streets were jam-packed in places.
We were supposed to fly to Lukla to begin our trek up to Everest Base Camp. For 3 days we sat at the airport because it was too cloudy up at Lukla and no flights were able to fly in or out. Apparently this happens quite often, but it was still a major pain. It didn't help that the airport didn't have nearly enough seats or any restaurants or anything to kill time in. People were just sitting around on piles of bags, praying to catch a break. We mostly played Connect 4.
Tana catching some Z's.
After 3 days of waiting, we decided to call an audible. We threw in the towel on Everest Base Camp and decided to try our luck trekking up to Annapurna Base Camp instead. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise. This trek became a once in a lifetime experience that I will never forget.
